Solve Any Equation by Graphing
Turn "solve for x" into "find where two graphs cross".
Here's the single move that saves the most time on SAT math: stop solving equations, and start finding where two graphs cross.
Put the left side of the equation on one line, the right side on another, and read the x-value where they meet. That x is your answer.
It doesn't care whether the equation is a clean line, something messier with an x-squared, or even an exponential like 2x = 32. Same trick every time, and it skips almost every spot where a sign error would cost you the point.
One more angle when a single equation is all you have: type the whole thing on one line using x, and if the problem is written with a different letter like a or k, just swap it for x. Desmos draws a curve, and the x-intercept it marks for you is the solution.

- Add 1 to both sides:
3x = 9. - Divide both sides by 3:
x = 3. - Any dropped sign or arithmetic slip on the way loses the point.

The payoff: Two clicks with nothing to mis-add, instead of two algebra steps where one sign error costs the question.

Before you start: set up Desmos
Convert decimals to fractions
Desmos shows decimals like 1.333. SAT choices are usually fractions. Click the round fraction-converter button next to a value to turn 1.333 into 4/3.
Turn on Projector Mode for clearer graphs
Desmos draws thin lines by default, which makes a crossing or intercept hard to pin down. Open the wrench icon (Graph Settings, top right) and turn on Projector Mode for thicker lines and larger labels, so the points you click are easier to hit exactly.
Widen the axis bounds when the graph looks empty
Desmos opens on a small window from -10 to 10 on both axes. If a crossing, vertex, or data point sits outside that box, the graph can look empty even when an answer exists. Open the wrench icon and widen the x and y bounds until the point you need comes into view.

The Desmos trap: when to close the calculator
- If a question asks for a constant that makes a system have no solution or infinitely many solutions, sliders are finicky and estimation-prone. Set the slopes or coefficients equal algebraically instead.
- If the equation factors in a couple of seconds, factoring is faster than graphing and clicking.
- The fraction button doesn't just convert a decimal, it simplifies it too. A value that would read as 10/12 comes back as 5/6, so trust that reduced form to match the answer choices.
